1894: Everton and Liverpool played the first Merseyside derby. Everton won 3-0 at Goodison Park.
1937: Benny Lynch retained his world flyweight title at Clyde’s Shawfield Stadium with a 13th-round knockout of fellow British boxer Peter Kane. The contest is regarded as one of the finest flyweight bouts of all time.
1954: Britain’s Chris Chataway knocked five seconds off the world 5,000 metres record, clocking 13 minutes 51.6 seconds in beating Russian Vladimir Kuts at London’s White City.
1984: Derbyshire’s John Lowe made the first televised nine-dart finish in darts. He did it at the World Matchplay in Slough to collect a record prize of £102,000. His 501 was made up of six treble 20s, treble 17, treble 18 and double 18.
2002: Britain’s Paula Radcliffe won the Chicago Marathon, setting a then world record time of two hours, 17 minutes, 18 seconds.
2006: World champion Tim Don was suspended for three months by the British Triathlon Association after missing three out-of-competition drug tests.
2007: Leeds Rhinos beat St Helens 33-6 in the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford to claim their second title in four years.
2010: British diver Tom Daley won gold in the 10-metre platform at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, the day after he claimed gold with team-mate Max Brick in the synchronised 10m platform competition.
2011: Former world heavyweight champion David Haye announced his retirement. He later came out of retirement to fight Dereck Chisora after the pair had come to blows during a press conference. Haye called time on his career again in 2018 after losing twice to fellow Brit Tony Bellew.
2016: Former Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-hill announced her retirement from athletics aged 30.
