Letter warns residents borough could soon face tougher Covid restrictions
RESIDENTS across East Staffordshire have received a letter from Staffordshire County Council warning them they could face tougher Covid measures after the number of cases increased “five-fold” compared to the same time last month in the county.
The letter, described as an “Urgent Covid-19 update”, was signed by Councillor Johnny Mcmahon, cabinet member for health, care and wellbeing, and Councillor Duncan Goodfellow, leader of the borough council.
Burton has been on the edge of being placed in stricter Covid measures after cases in four areas of the town went up alarmingly.
But the spike in numbers levelled and the town managed to avoid tougher sanctions. However, residents have been warned not to be complacent as cases might again rise.
The letter said: “Covid-19 cases are rising quickly and we must all take ongoing action to prevent the spread of infection.
“As of October 17, the weekly case rate was 126.1 per 100,000 people, which is a five-fold increase compared to the same time last month and we can see that local hospital admissions are starting to rise.”
The letter went on: “The Government continues to announce further restrictions for different parts of England and if cases continue to rise East
Staffordshire could soon face tougher measures that will affect individuals, families, communities and, critically, our local economy.”
With Halloween and Bonfire Night approaching, the letter urged people not to mix indoors with other households, adding: “This advice would not affect households currently in a bubble.” It went on: “You should seek to avoid visiting friends or family in care homes, other than in exceptional circumstances.”
