Safety tips if you have fireworks in the garden

LOCAL authorities have issued advice to residents in a bid to keep them safe when handling fireworks ahead of the festive season.
Due to social distancing restrictions, a number of public firework displays have been cancelled this year.
This could mean more people will want to do fireworks in their own gardens.
If you are planning to create your own firework display this year, there are a few things you should know, including what you are allowed to buy, what time fireworks are allowed and safety measures that must be taken.
A spokesman for an East Midlands local authority said: “Usually at this time of year we are gearing up for a number of festivals, but this year we will need to mark them in different ways. Firework displays have been a big part of Diwali and, of course, Bonfire Night, but there will be no organised displays in the city this year.
“People will be able to meet others they don’t live with, in their gardens, sticking to the rule of six, and it’s likely some families will have their own fireworks. “We urge them to follow the firework code, only buying fireworks that conform to the British safety standard and are suitable for the size of their garden - and only from a legitimate supplier.
“Fireworks should never be let off on the street or in busy places, and it’s against the law to let them off after 11pm at night.
“We also urge people not to relax and stop following the measures that will protect them against coronavirus during any festivities. Mixing inside your house with people you don’t live with, who aren’t in a support bubble with you, is still not allowed. It’s never been more important to do everything you can to celebrate safely.”
What you need to know:
■ Your fireworks must be bought from a legitimate retailer;
■ Always ensure the fireworks you buy are suitable for the size of your garden;
■ Check that your fireworks conform to British Standard (BS 7114);
■ Fireworks should be stored in a metal box which is kept closed between use.
■ Never put fireworks in your pocket;
■ Never hold a lit firework;
■ If you are using sparklers make sure you are wearing gloves;
■ Sparklers, once finished, should be placed in a bucket of cold water;
■ Fireworks should not be set off in the street or busy places.
Rules to remember:
■ It is illegal to possess a firework if you are under 18 years old;
Fireworks must not be set-off after 11pm;
It is illegal to set off fireworks in the street or public place.
