Brewers stars hand out meals for kids
LEAGUE SPONSORS WEIGH WITH FREE PIZZAS AS....
PACKED lunches and pizzas have been handed out by football stars from League One side Burton Albion this week in a bid to make sure that children do not go hungry this school half term.
The Brewers players have been echoing the passionate calls of England and Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford to help tackle child poverty and to provide free meals to 1.4 million disadvantaged children.
Since Monday, the Brewers have been providing up to 100 children per day from across East Staffordshire and the surrounding areas with free takeaway packed lunches throughout half term.
And New EFL Trophy sponsor Papa John’s pizzas contributed to packed lunches at Burton Albion by providing some of the food.
Brewers first-team players Kane Hemmings, Ryan Edwards, Ben Fox and manager Jake Buxton offered their assistance to help make the packed lunches – and hand them out to local families from the club’s Pirelli Stadium ground.
The caring initiative comes after Parliamentary motion put forward by Labour to provide 1.4 million disadvantaged children with £15-a-week food vouchers during school holidays until Easter was voted down by the Conservative Government – including local MP
Kate Griffiths – after insistnsisting that the best way to ensure children got the e help they need was through the welfare system and cash already handed out to local authorities and via a temporary £20 uplift in Universal Credit.
This decision in the Commons was much to the despair of campaigning g England striker Rashford, whose campaign has been taken up by many across the country – including restaurants and takeaway venues in the Burton area, which have also been handing put food to families.
Even a Tory council in Prim Prime Minister Boris Joh Johnson’s constituen ency in west London has stepped in to provide free meals m for those who would normally get them in te term time.
T The Brewers have been backing the initiative wit with packed lunches available to collect from the Pirelli Stadium club shop throughout half-term – until today.
