FORWARD MAKING MARK FOR HOME TOWN CLUB Hemmings finding his range as dedication pays off

-

JAKE Buxton is thrilled to see Burton Albion forward Kane Hemmings score the goals his play and work ethic deserve.

Hemmings bagged a brace for the Brewers in Tuesday night’s 2-2 draw away against League One high-flyers Peterborough United.

And that came after Hemmings equalised for the Brewers within a minute of AFC Wimbledon taking the lead at the Pirelli Stadium last Saturday.

Hemmings has four goals this season – his first came in the 1-1 away draw against Bristol Rovers on October 17 – after joining his home town club in the summer following his departure from Dundee.

Although Hemmings had to wait to open his account, Brewers manager Buxton was always confident the goals would come.

“Never for one minute have I had to say ‘you’re not making a near-post run’ or ‘you’re not getting in the box enough’ or ‘you’re not getting in positions to score goals’,” said Buxton.

“He has been in those positions but it’s just not fallen for him.

“But his work ethic, his hold-up play and his character has been tremendous.

“He has continued to work hard. When he didn’t look like scoring he has carried on doing the right thing and I do believe if you do the right thing and continue to work hard, to be a good pro, then things do come round for you.

“And it has started to do so now, he is getting his just rewards for the good performances.”

Hemmings will be aiming to increase his tally when the Brewers welcome Blackpool to the Pirelli today (3pm).

And today’s game could also be a landmark for Brewers team-mate

Lucas Akins, who is expected to play and make his 250th League appearance for Albion.

“I spoke with Lucas about the whole situation but he moved away from the limelight, wanting to talk about club greats like Aaron Webster and Darren Stride instead,” Buxton added.

“He didn’t want to have any recognition for getting 250 games. He’s a top lad. He gives everything he has got, regardless of the position he plays.

“If we had 10 more Lucas Akinses we would be in a good place. He has been class for the football club and long may it continue.

“Bein “Being available for s selection is key in terms of lo looking after y yourself on a and off the pitch. p Lucas has done that. “You can c count on o one hand ho how many tim times he has misse missed games because of injury since I have come back to the club.

“And the level of performance have been to a good standard, which allows you to pick him most weeks.

“I told him I played in Aaron Webster’s testimonial, 12 years ago, and there’s no reason why he can’t get to 10 years and have a testimonial of his own.”
