A SEEMINGLY ordinary spot in a quiet village now has a higher Google rating that the likes of Disney World Florida.

Sleepy Redbank Corner, at the junction of Burton Road and Tamworth Road, in Measham, is rubbing shoulders with Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and co when it comes to Google rankings.

It comes after online jokers declared Redbank Corner a “historical landmark” on Google Maps, which later led to a flurry of funny five-star reviews and ratings of the area – and its rise up the rankings as it became an internet sensation.

Its Google ranking was first revealed last year when in just a few days around 30 reviews had been left on the Google site for Redbank, leading to a rise in its Google ratings to coveted 4.7 stars out of five – on a par with Disney World, Florida.

However, since then internet jokers have ensured Redbank’s Google ranking has risen to 4.8 with 49 Google reviews.

Disney World, which is one of the most visited locations in the world, racking up 58 million visitors in 2018, is still at 4.7 with more than 217,000 reviews.

By comparison Google reviews give Alton Towers 4.4, while Warwick Castle is rated as 4.5. Buckingham Palace also gets 4.5 stars.

But the move has baffled and caused smiles as underwhelming Redbank is quite an ordinary spot in the North West Leicestershire village – named after a historic brickworks which used to operate there.

Redbank Corner boasts nothing more a small flowerbed, a bench and a traffic light, but it is just down the road from furniture store DFS.

After being given historic landmark status, which any internet user can do for a venue, it has led to cheeky reviewers jumping on the bandwagon and wading in describing the crossroads as a “hidden gem”.

One jokey reviewer even described Redbank as “the place where dreams come true”.

Craig Henderson said: “Definitely a corner. I’ve seen a few in my time but this one has really made an impact on my life.

“I would highly recommend visiting this corner if you get the chance, it’s well worth a visit. It even has its own bin and a lamppost. Not to be biased or anything, but other corners don’t stand a chance really.

“I once threw a penny in the bush at Redbank Corner and wished that it would be recognised for its true glory and magnificence. Now look.”

Richard Leedham added: “Wow! This corner never stops giving! The views are amazing! I managed to catch the corner on the same day as the DFS Sale. How lucky was I?!”

Tim Anderson said: “Never mind travelling to Thailand or Australia... this is a lovely place to spend a gap year. Redbank Corner... where dreams come true. Don’t miss it.”

Dave C said: “As corners go this is a beauty. Man alone could not have designed such a thing, surely it was divine inspiration that led to the building of this curved piece of Tarmac.”

Nicola Allton noted: “Best bench in Measham. Perfect for admiring the flowers and nearby lights. Suggested visit duration – up to five minutes.”

Wittyboy said: “Get yourselves down to the corner. Hours of fun for all.”
