Cases rise as UK deaths pass 50,000

EAST Staffordsh­ire has seen scores more coronaviru­s cases in the last 24 hours.

New stats show 64 people tested positive in the borough in the 24 hours up to 6.30pm on Tuesday.

It comes after the previous day’s number was the highest on record at 95.

Staffordsh­ire County Council revealed the weekly infection rate across the county was nearly 60 per cent above the England-wide average.

Across the UK, in the last 24 hours there were 22,950 new cases, according to the stats.

That means there have now been 1,233,775 cases nationally.

There have been 595 deaths, taking the overall total to 50,365. The UK is the first country in Europe to pass the 50,000 deaths mark.

East Staffordsh­ire

A total of 2,348 people in East Staffordsh­ire have had confirmed cases of Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic – a rise of 64.

The infection rate since the start of the pandemic now stands at 1,960.7 per 100,000 people in the borough. The population is around 118,000.

There have been no more deaths announced, so the total stands 151, at a rate of 126.1 in every 100,000 residents.

Across Staffordsh­ire, the infection rate since the start of the pandemic is 1,970.3, with 17,330 cases in total – a daily rise of 438.

There have been a total of 818 deaths in Staffordsh­ire – six since the previous daily figures were released – meaning the county’s death rate is 92.3 per 100,000 people.

South Derbyshire

In South Derbyshire, there have been 50 new cases, with the total since the start of the pandemic now standing at 2,174 at an infection rate of 2,026.8.

There have been no deaths in the latest 24-hour period, with the total number still at 92 – a death rate of 86.7.

There have been 16,055 cases confirmed in Derbyshire – a rise of 487 – and the infection rate since the start of the pandemic is now 2,000.1.

The number of deaths in Derbyshire stands at 708, a rise of 11, equating to 88.2 per 100,000 people in the county. North West Leicesters­hire There have been 1,480 cases in North West Leicesters­hire – 69 of which are new – meaning the infection rate is 1,428.4.

The death rate is 63.7, with 66 people having died within 28 days of testing positive, but the latest numbers show no new fatalities. The Leicesters­hire-wide figures show 14,011 cases – a rise of 467 at an infection rate of 1,984.1. Two people have died in the county since the previous day’s figures, meaning the total is now 454 deaths at a death rate of 64.3.
