Shop offers vital service for nothing

SHIELDING VILLAGERS RECEIVE SUPPLIES VIA THEIR ‘BUDDIES’

A VILLAGE shop will continue supporting its community by offering a free delivery service to those who are isolating during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Marchington Village Shop, in Church Lane, will be working with more than 45 volunteers who are part of the Marchington Buddies Scheme, set up by the parish council.

The village shop is run entirely by volunteers and has been delivering essentials such as flour, milk and bread to isolating customers since the first lockdown in March.

Customers can pay for their shopping on the phone and will be given the name and number of the “buddy” who lives closest and will deliver their shopping.

Parish councillor Ian Morgan said: “The scheme was set up by the parish council as something that could work, especially for the elderly and vulnerable. So far, it’s going really well.

“Having lived here for more than 30 years I was aware of those who will need the help and the support show by volunteers has allowed us to work with plenty of people.

“Since the start the demand has increased and it’s just our way of supporting those close to us and allowing them to continue to stay safe.”

Liz Morgan, Ian’s wife and chair of the Marchington Village Shop said: “The free delivery service has proven to be very popular for customers and also the volunteers who are delivering the shopping. It’s been great to see the support shown to one another and those who are vulnerable and isolating have been very grateful for the service.”
