Latest figures show scale of coronaviru­s

MORE than 50 people have tested positive for coronaviru­s across East Staffordsh­ire in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures show that 56 new cases of the virus were recorded across the area in the 24 hours to 4pm yesterday, November

19.

A total of 22,915 new cases were documented across the UK in that period.

The latest rise takes the cumulative number since the start of the pandemic to 1,453,256 cases nationally.

In the latest 24-hour spell analysed, 501 more people died in the UK within 28 days of testing positive for the virus, taking the overall total to 53,775.

East Staffordsh­ire

A total of 2,998 people in East Staffordsh­ire have had confirmed cases of Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic - a rise of 56.

The infection rate since the start of the pandemic now stands at 2,503.5 per 100,000 people in the borough. The population is around 118,000. There has been one more death announced, so the total stands 166, at a rate of 138.6 in every 100,000 residents.

Across Staffordsh­ire, the infection rate since the start of the pandemic is 2,490.8, with 21,908 cases in total - a 24-hour rise of 527. There have been a total of 928 deaths in Staffordsh­ire – a rise of 12 in the last 24 hours - meaning the county’s death rate is 105.5 per 100,000 people.

South Derbyshire

In South Derbyshire, there have been 52 new cases, with the total since the start of the pandemic now standing at 2,634 at an infection rate of 2,455.7.

The total number of deaths in South Derbyshire remains at 97, meaning the death rate is 90.4.

The number of cases in Derbyshire now stands at 18,778 – a rise of 263 - and the infection rate since the start of the pandemic is now 2,339.4. The number of deaths in Derbyshire stands at 784, a rise of nine, equating to 97.7 per 100,000 people in the county.

■North West Leicesters­hire There have been 1,963 cases in North West Leicesters­hire - 47 of which were recorded in the last 24 hours - meaning the infection rate is 1,894.6. The death rate is 74.3, with 77 people having died within 28 days of testing positive.
