Mercedes driver tried to blame Covid for not having had insurance for two years

-

A MERCEDES driver was caught out for having not had insurance for two years and when he was finally pulled up by police the cheeky motorist tried to blame it on the pandemic.

The driver was caught in his fairly new silver motor, complete with head-turning alloy wheels, by chance in High Street, Woodville, by officers from the Swadlincote Police safer neighbourhood Team while they were out on patrol on Wednesday.

When questioned by police, the driver tried to claim his direct debit had not gone through due to coronavirus, stating there could have been an error, and that’s why he did not have insurance.

The officers decided to check and found out he had not been insured since 2018.

While the driver was telling the sergeant his story, two other officers were having none of it and were already filling out the paperwork and the vehicle was seized, said a police spokesman.

Police urged people not to buy expensive cars like the Merc if they cannot afford the insurance – and to definitely not to go on to lie to the police about it as they would be found out.

A spokesman said: “Don’t lie to the sergeant or you will lose your expensive car.

“Swadlincote Safer Neighbourhood Team, were on patrol on the High Street, Woodville.

“They came across an expensive Mercedes showing no insurance.

“The sergeant spoke to the driver who explained his direct debit had not gone through due to Covid-19, so there could be an error.

“It was explained the vehicle is was showing in trade since 2018, meaning the vehicle had not been insured since 2018.

“We appreciate it’s been a hard year for a lot of people, but most law-abiding citizens in Swadlincote pay their insurance.

“Lesson of the day – don’t drive expensive cars if you cannot afford the insurance.”
