Swad is a healthy place to live

TOWN RANKS HIGH IN STUDY COMPARED TO REST OF DERBYSHIRE

- By GEORGE WHITE george.white@reachplc.com

A NEW interactive map has revealed the healthiest and unhealthiest areas in Derbyshire.

The Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC), which involves researchers from the University of Leeds, University College London, University of Liverpool and the University of Oxford, has compared how healthy areas of the UK are.

Swadlincote comes out as comparatively healthy in the list, while parts of Derby are in the worst bracket

It ranks areas on a number of criteria, including access to fast-food restaurants, pubs and health services, as well as air quality, leisure facilities and gambling outlets.

The map does not reflect the healthiness of people in the area but instead how healthy the area is considered by their access to certain services, Somerset Live reports.

A colour code is used with blue marking an area as best performing while dark orange marks the worst, varying from numbers one (most healthy) to 10 (least healthy).

Some areas of Derbyshire are ranked in the healthiest, being in the lowest of these brackets - called deciles. These include parts of Swadlincote, Littleover and Chesterfield.

Other areas of Derbyshire are ranked in the highest bracket, including parts of Oakwood, Long Eaton and Derby city centre, making them among the most unhealthy places to live in the country.

DERBY

Derby is one of the most unhealthy areas in the county, with certain parts of the city centre ranking in the least healthy bracket on the CDRC scale.

Areas of Litchurch, Osmaston and Alvaston are also rated as highly unhealthy, and around half of Oakwood is in the worst-performing decile on the chart.

The healthiest areas of Derby include Mickleover and Littleover, with certain areas in these places among the most healthy.

SWADLINCOTE

Swadlincote is one of Derbyshire’s healthiest regions, with large sections of the town ranking in the lowest tiers on the chart.

Yet certain areas, such as Oversetts and Church Gresley, are significantly less healthy.

CHESTERFIELD

The centre of Chesterfield is classed as relatively unhealthy, with Brampton performing particularly poorly on the chart.

However, local areas of Landsley Green, Birdholme and Calow are some of the healthiest in the county, with parts in all three ranking in the top 10 per cent in the UK.

DRONFIELD

Dronfield is split down the middle in terms of healthiness, with the west performing better than the east.

The areas of Holmesdale and Snape Hill are the least healthy areas of the town, with Dronfield Woodhouse ranking as the healthiest.

HEANOR

Heanor is also split in terms of healthiness, although in the opposite way to Dronfield.

In the west, areas around Ray Street and Loscoe perform particularly poorly. Whereas in the east, Marlpool ranks as very healthy according to the map.

RIPLEY

Much like in Heanor, the west of Ripley is far less healthy than the east.

The town centre and Heage are in very high brackets, but healthiness levels improve in areas heading towards Codnor.

BELPER

Belper ranks as one of the least healthy towns in the county.

Areas between White Moor and Far Laund perform best, but nowhere in the town ranks in the healthiest 40 per cent in the UK.

ALFRETON

Alfreton is also particularly unhealthy, with large parts of the town ranking in the two highest brackets on the chart.

The picture improves heading south towards Somercotes and Riddings but gets worse again in neighbouring Pinxton.

BOLSOVER

Bolsover performs relatively well overall, with most areas in the region ranking in the healthiest 50 per cent of regions in the country.

However, nearby villages of Shuttlewood, Long Duckmanton and Sutton Scarsdale are classed as unhealthy.

ASHBOURNE

Ashbourne is a bit of a mixed bag. In the north, levels are less healthy than in the south.

Yet the nearby village of Mapleton is easily the least healthy, ranking as one of the worst-performing areas in the UK.

MATLOCK

Matlock is one of the healthiest towns in Derbyshire.

While Upper Hackney and Tansley are classed as unhealthy, no part of the town centre performs poorly on the CDRC scale.

BUXTON

The centre of Buxton is very unhealthy, as is Burbage and the north of Harpur Hill. But the outskirts of the town centre perform much better, with some areas ranking in the top 30 per cent in the country.
