A TATTOO artist from South Derbyshire is again raising funds for the Derby and Burton hospitals trust after raising more than £5,000 in the first lockdown earlier this year.

Adam Foster decided to start creating family portraits while his tattoo parlour was closed, and asking customers to donate the fees for the artwork to the Derby and Burton Hospitals Charity.

Some of his work included a stunning portrait of Amged El-Hawrani, who was associate clinical director and ear, nose and throat consultant at the trust, with his former colleagues shortly after his death in March.

This time around, Adam is specifically raising funds for the dermatology department at Queen’s Hospital in Burton. He said: “It is a way for the community to come together at a time where there seems to be a lot of darkness in the world and do something good.

“My mother-in-law, Sharon Mellor, works in the medical photography department, so I asked her if there was anything specific that I could raise funds for, and that’s how I came to the decision to raise funds for the ‘dermascope’ lens.”

Adam hopes to raise £2,000 to put towards a “dermascope” lens for the medical photography department to attach to their cameras to take highresolution images which the Dermatology team will use to monitor moles and skin lesions. Sharon Mellor, clinical photographer at Queen’s Hospital, said: “I really am so proud of Adam, it’s such a wonderful gesture. I’ve had melanoma myself so it’s something that feels very close to home. A large portion of the work of the dermatology department focuses on skin cancers, so this piece of equipment will be of great use to staff and patients.”

Adam, who usually works as a tattoo artist at Nomad Tattoo and Retail in Swadlincote, has again been inundated with requests for pieces during the second lockdown. He will continue to work through requests until lockdown ends this week.

He said: “It’s been amazing to see the response it’s had again and it was a real honour to create the art for Mr El-hawrani’s team earlier this year.”
