LIKE THE fashion world, interior trends come and go as the seasons change. Some – like our current obsession with all things grey – may last a few years. Others, like the golden pineapple popular a few years ago, may be one-season wonders.

But just like the little black dress or a classic trench coat, there are some styles that defy seasonal trends.

And as the new year begins, if you are looking to make some changes to your home that will last beyond the 2020s, here are some timeless trends to pique your imagination.

PARQUET FLOORING

FOR many of us, the sight of parquet flooring will take us right back to our school days when the distinctive herringbone design was something of a staple in halls and corridors.

But recent research conducted by a wooden flooring company has found that consumer interest in parquet has been at an all-time high in 2020.

Woodpecker Flooring used data from Google Trends to show that interest in the terms ‘parquet flooring’ and ‘herringbone’ within the search engine’s Homes & Garden category peaked in 2020.

And it’s easy to see why. Parquet is versatile, timeless and elegant, and brings with it plenty of charm. In domestic settings it works in rooms of all sizes, adding depth and interest.

Plus, thanks to the advances of engineered wooden flooring, homeowners no longer have to opt for solid wooden blocks and can instead look at modern alternatives which can be used with underfloor heating and are more suitable to rooms where temperatures may vary.

While there is no doubt that installing new flooring in the home is a big budget job, opting for a classic style means it will pay dividends for years to come.
