Jimmy Mcgrory scored a Scottish top-flight record of eight goals in one game for Celtic against Dunfermlin­e.

1958:

A crowd of 60,000 watched Manchester United beat Red Star Belgrade 2-1 in a European Cup tie at Old Trafford. The second leg, three weeks later, was to be the last appearance of the Busby Babes before the Munich air disaster.

1999:

Wimbledon signed striker John Hartson from West Ham United for a club record £7m.

2003:

Robbie Fowler agreed personal terms with Manchester City for a £6m move from Leeds United.

2007:

Top seed Martin Adams beat qualifier Phill Nixon 7-6 to win the Lakeside World Darts Championsh­ip title at Frimley Green.

2008:

Andy Murray lost in four sets to Jo-wilfried Tsonga in the first round of the Australian Open.

Dunfermlin­e were expelled from the Scottish Cup for “a number of breaches of cup competitio­n rules” in their 7-1 fourth-round win over Stenhousem­uir. The Pars fielded the ineligible Calum Woods and also failed to adhere to rules on under-21 players.

Then world number one golfer Rory Mcilroy signed “a multi-year sponsorshi­p agreement” with Nike, the sportswear company. The deal was reported to be worth as much as £150m.

Nicole Cooke, the 2008 Olympic road race champion, retired from cycling with immediate effect at the age of 29.

Jason Roy hit an England one-day internatio­nal record score of 180 as the tourists opened the series against Australia with a five-wicket win at the MCG.
