Jimmy Mcgrory scored a Scottish top-flight record of eight goals in one game for Celtic against Dunfermline.

A crowd of 60,000 watched Manchester United beat Red Star Belgrade 2-1 in a European Cup tie at Old Trafford. The second leg, three weeks later, was to be the last appearance of the Busby Babes before the Munich air disaster.

Wimbledon signed striker John Hartson from West Ham United for a club record £7m.
