1871:
The first meeting of the Rugby Football Union at the Pall Mall Restaurant near Trafalgar Square was attended by representatives from 21 clubs and schools.
1907:
Golfer Henry Cotton, who was the last Briton before Nick Faldo to win the Open Championship three times, was born. Cotton was awarded a knighthood a few days before he died in 1987.
2004:
Wales lodged an appeal with UEFA over Russia midfielder Yegor Titov’s failed drugs test, asking for the governing body to award them a 3-0 win in their Euro 2004 play-off second-leg tie – a match they had lost, costing them a place in the Portugal finals. They eventually lost the appeal.
2008:
Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist announced his retirement from international cricket.
2010:
Portsmouth had their transfer embargo, which had been in place since October, lifted by the Premier League. The embargo had been handed down due to the south coast outfit owing money to other clubs.
2011:
Sky Sports football presenter Richard Keys resigned from his position with the broadcaster following his role in the sexism controversy which began with criticism of assistant referee Sian Massey.
2013:
The Football Association charged Chelsea’s Eden Hazard with violent conduct following an incident with a Swansea City ball boy, saying in a statement that a “standard punishment that would otherwise apply was clearly insufficient”.
2014:
Manchester United completed the club record £37.1m capture of Juan Mata.
