Busy route between villages shut over structure concerns

-

A BUSY route in Derbyshire between two villages has been closed over the weekend and was expected to still be closed this morning.

The bridge between Willington and Repton has been closed to vehicles after an inspection was carried out by Derbyshire Highways and Derbyshire County Council on Saturday.

A re-inspection was due yesterday and the causeway between the two villages remained closed as of 6pm last night.

Willington Parish Council made the announcement on Facebook that the bridge would be closed by 3pm on Saturday.

A spokesman said: “Highways and county council have inspected the causeway, and due to structural concerns on the culverts, they will be closing the bridge within the next hour.

“Due to be closed by 3pm Saturday and reinspection on Sunday.”

South Derbyshire district councillor for Repton and Etwall Martyn Ford indicated on social media that the bridge would have another inspection this morning.

Bargate Lane, in Willington, has been closed due to the flooding, according to the roadworks website roadworks.org

Gas network company Cadent has also put in place temporary traffic lights on the Willington side of the bridge.

It comes as there have been issues with flooding in the Willington and Repton area. The River Trent flows nearby and some roads end up under water when levels are high.

There are also reports of flooding near to the Bailey Bridge, Walton, on the Barton under Needwood side of the crossing on social media, with people urging drivers not to attempt to drive through the water as cars have already become stuck.
