Trust carries out its 20,000th vaccination as nurse Chette gets jab

HOSPITALS in Derby and Burton have reached a remarkable milestone after administering their 20,000th Covid vaccination.

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB), has been giving doses of coronavirus vaccines to the most vulnerable people and frontline health and social workers since Tuesday, December 8, last year.

The trust had announced it gave out its 10,000th dose on January 15 and, after ramping up its operations, it has given out another 10,000 in less than three weeks.

UHDB says the 20,000th dose was given out on Tuesday, February 2, and is urging people to come forward when they receive an invitation to get theirs.

Chette Simbajon, an overseas nurse at the trust, received her vaccine on Tuesday, and says there’s no reason to be afraid of it.

“It feels so good to be having the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine,” she said. “It’s so important we protect ourselves and the patients that we are caring for. The vaccines are thoroughly tested, so I trust them to protect me.

“You should not be afraid of having your vaccine – it is for our own good and we are privileged to be able to have this opportunity.”

Chette was given her dose by Tracy Harris, who has been redeployed from the hospitals Midwifery Safeguarding Team to the vaccine hub.

Chette, 26, moved to the UK from the Philippines in August last year and has spent her entire time working at the trust, where she is now based in the Trauma and Orthopaedic ward.

She said: “I have not yet been able to experience this beautiful country in the way I had imagined, but when this is all over and it is safe to do so, I am very excited about being able to visit London in my spare time – a dream of mine!”
