Results OK for Brewers again as four beaten

-

TUESDAY night’s League One results were again favourable to Burton Albion, with defeats for four of the teams they will see themselves as having a chance of catching.

The exception was a victory for Swindon Town, one which lifted them out of the four relegation places, but since they were at home to Wigan Athletic, the Brewers could not have it both ways in that one.

Swindon’s 1-0 win came as a result of Brett Pitman’s 17th-minute header.

They had Dion Conroy sent off after 65 minutes for a foul on Will Keane but Wigan were unable to threaten them.

Northampton Town dropped into the relegation places with a 2-0 defeat away to Blackpool and they have won only one of their last nine matches.

Marvin Ekpiteta put Blackpool ahead after 12 minutes but they had to wait until stoppage time for Jerry Yates to score the second.

Bristol Rovers are only outside the bottom four on goal difference and they had that severely dented as Accrington Stanley thrashed them 6-1.

Joe Pritchard put Stanley ahead after eight minutes and although Sam Nicholson equalised three minutes later, Dion Charles had scored twice within the next five minutes and Colby Bishop added one after 28 minutes to make it 4-1 by half-time.

Bishop scored again three minutes after the break and Charles completed his hat-trick after 70 minutes to leave the Gas without a win in their last eight matches in all competitions.

Shrewsbury’s good recent run was dented again as they lost at home for the first time since Steve Cotterill took over as manager, Owen Dale scoring the only goal of the game for Crewe Alexandra after 27 minutes.

Former Burton Albion midfielder Tom Naylor was on target for Portsmouth as they beat Charlton Athletic 3-1 at the Valley.

Michael Jacobs put Pompey ahead six minutes before half-time.

Jayden Stockley headed his first Charlton goal to equalise after 52 minutes but, three minutes later, Naylor headed in from a free kick.

Andy Cannon scored the third after an hour as Portsmouth put successive home defeats against top two Hull City and Lincoln City behind them.
