Flooding woe for villagers,

- By HELEN KREFT helen.kreft@reachplc.com

BLOCKED drains have caused so much anxiety to one resident that they have been admitted to hospital, a councillor has said.

Flooding problems continue to plague people in Rosliston, who saw one of their main roads underwater last year and forced a couple to move out of their home for a year.

The couple recently returned home but a recent downpour once again left them in fear and one was then admitted to hospital due to anxiety, Paul Marbrow, of Rosliston Parish Council, said.

Council workers have returned to the village to unblock drains, in Main Street, after recent torrential downpours caused further problems, but they have become blocked again.

Mr Marbrow said: “I know an elderly woman who has water running down in front of her house and cars are splashing her house and she is getting very anxious. She is frightened to come out of her house.

“There is a couple in their 70s where one of them was admitted to hospital on the Saturday, January 23, when we had rain as they became so anxious. Their home was flooded last year and they have only just returned home.

“Two drains are getting blocked, one near the post box.

“Two weeks ago we had the council come out to clear the drains and it stopped the water running but not properly, and they are blocked again.”

Rosliston resident David Miller, whose 89-year-old mother in law has also been left worried, said: “There is a drainage blockage in Main Street.”

Councillor Dan Pegg, who represents Rosliston on South Derbyshire District Council, has been on to the authority, as has Mr Marbrow.

He said: “It was gushing out the drain and the council came and cleared it but it has filled up again and blocked.

“My 89-year-old mother-in-law lives nearby and cars are coming down the road and splashing into her drive, destroying the fence. She doesn’t need that.

“Cars are coming through in torrential rain.”

A spokesman for Derbyshire County Council said: “On Thursday, January 28, we responded to reports of flooding in Rosliston and an officer went down and cleared blocked gullies in Main Street as well as a drain and associated manhole, which resolved the issue.

“We also spoke to local residents and representatives about their concerns.

“We’re aware there are wider issues of flooding in the area and we can assure residents we are investigating the causes and possible measures to try to improve the situation in the long term.”
