Getting more and more fed up with issue of dog mess

ONE PROBLEM AREA ‘LIKE DOING A SLALOM COURSE’

STAPENHILL and Newhall are among the worst spots in the area for dog mess, it is claimed, with one parent saying it is so bad, it is like doing a slalom course when they take their baby out in a pram.

Burton Mail readers have been naming the worst locations after a council said it had noticed a large increase in the problem during lockdown.

South Derbyshire District Council has warned irresponsible dog owners who let their pets mess on pavements and parks and do not clear up afterwards they risk being hit with a £100 fixed penalty notice or could even end up in court.

Fines have already been issued to people in Newhall, Church Broughton and Coton in the Elms.

Michael Langford said: “Newhall and Swadlincote are getting worse. It’s like a slalom course taking the pram out.”

But it is not just South Derbyshire that is a problem. Residents across Burton have also been left fed up and have revealed the town’s problem hotspots, one of which is Stapenhill.

Faye Storer said: “Stapenhill is shocking. I’m a dog owner and wouldn’t dream of not picking mess up. People should be fined.”

Jessica Standring said: “Stapenhill has gotten ridiculous with the amount of mess left. People here should be ashamed.”

Mark Foster said Manor Road in Stapenhill was a problem, while Ibran Shah called Stapenhill Cemetery “an absolute disgrace”.

Kay Amos Green said Ridgeway, Hawthorn Crescent and Sycamore Road in Stapenhill were bad.

Les Stretton claimed all of Stapenhill and Brizlincote were affected.

Elsewhere in East Staffordshire, Angelique Halliday thanked a person who has been out drawing rings in chalk around piles of mess in a bit to shame owners in Rolleston on Dove.

She said: “Rolleston on Dove has a dog poo circler on the school run. Don’t know who it is but he/she makes a point with the chalk around it. Thank you, poo circler, you’ve saved my pushchair wheels many times.”

Jane Currin asked: “Can someone look at the streets near Burton’s Queen’s Hospital? I have lived there for 36 years and have never seen it as bad as it is now. It’s disgusting.”

Lucy Westwood said: “Alrewas should be listed. Worst place I’ve ever lived for dog poo.”

Margaret Patterson said: “I live in Calais Road, Horninglow, and outside my gate is a lamppost with a notice on it stating that a fine will be issued if anyone is found letting their dogs foul. Guess what? Yes, there is plenty of dog poo left right outside the front of my gate. Not good for wheelchair wheels.

“Filthy mess I have to wash outside often.

“It is done at night time. They let the dogs do the business and leave us to tread in it. Disgusting.”

Olga Glass said The Washlands before it was flooded was a problem area.

Libby Jenney said: “I am always seeing it in Brizlincote Valley but never caught anyone in the act. They must walk their dogs at night. More bins or CCTV would help but these people don’t seem to care.”

Steve Thompson said: “Siddalls Street in Winshill. Absolutely disgusting. Every time you walk down there there’s fresh mess.” Terri May Allen said: “There is always dog mess on Eton Road, Horninglow. I literally have to remember where it is on my way to work in the light as by the time I finish it’s dark. People who don’t clean up after their dogs shouldn’t have them. It’s absolutely disgusting.”

Jan Allen said: “All around Edgehill. I can’t believe some people do bag it then leave the bag in a hedge or on the pavement. We definitely could do with more bins.”

In South Derbyshire, one of the main problem areas seems to be Newhall.

Becky Hucker said: “It’s very bad around Newhall and Swadlincote. It’s time these irresponsible dog owners that ruin it for everyone else were dealt with properly.

“Sadly, because of people who can’t pick up, my dog now has to wear a muzzle as she’s recently had hundreds of pounds of treatment at the vet’s thanks to these people.

“It’s so unfair on other people and dog walkers who just want to safely exercise their pets.”

Hannah Saddal said: “Newhall Park is awful.

“I went last week with my daughter as we usually go to Eureka Park and there was just so much we had to end up leaving as she trod it in. I’ve never seen to much dog poo in one place.”

John Delaney said: “Hartshorne has been terrible. There seem to have been a lot of extra dogs bought during lockdown and an increase in dog walkers who just can’t be bothered to pick up the mess.”

Gemma Bannister said: “Moira Road, Woodville. It’s a game of avoid the poo on the way to school.”

Hannah Louise Geoghegan said: “Woodville Birds Estate has got a lot worse.”

Others have said Midway, Repton and Albert Village Lake are problem areas.
