Dons win sees Brewers close in on Wigan

-

LARGELY, results again favoured Burton Albion in the League One relegation zone on Saturday.

While the Brewers were beating Hull City 1-0, Wigan Athletic, immediately above them, were losing 3-2 at home to AFC Wimbledon.

It was the Dons’ first win in 12 games and lifted them out of the bottom four.

Goals from Jack Rudoni and Joe Pigott put them in control after half an hour but Wigan pulled one back through Curtis Tilt on the stroke of half-time and equalised through Jamie Proctor after 68 minutes.

Pigott’s penalty, after he was tripped by goalkeeper Jamie Jones, settled the game after 75 minutes.

Northampton Town are third bottom after a goalless draw away to Accrington Stanley and Swindon Town are back in the bottom four after losing 1-0 at home to Shrewsbury Town, Harry Chapman scoring the only goal from distance.

Bristol Rovers are only out of the bottom four on goal difference after their goalless draw away to Fleetwood Town, while Rochdale are far from clear of danger after losing 2-0 at home to Charlton Athletic, for whom Chuks Aneke and Deji Oshilaja were on target.

Burton’s opponents tomorrow night, Blackpool, lost 2-0 away to

Ipswich Town, whose goals came from Alan Judge and Luke Woolfenden.

At the top, Lincoln City had regained the leadership on Friday by winning 3-0 away to Gillingham and they remain three points clear thanks to the Brewers’ win.

Doncaster Rovers drew level on points with Hull and have three games in hand after ending Oxford United’s 13-match unbeaten run with a 3-2 home win. The sides have identical goals for and against records and Doncaster are technically second.

Goals from Jon Taylor, Fejiri Okenabirhie and Taylor Richards made it nine wins in 10 League games for Rovers, with Sam Long and Olamide Shodipo replying.

Sunderland and MK Dons drew 2-2. The Black Cats went ahead early on through Charlie Wyke but Joe Mason and Cameron Jerome had the Dons in front by the 19th minute. Luke O’nien scored a 56th-minute equaliser.

Luke Jephcott’s double had Plymouth Argyle 2-0 up with eight minutes left away to Portsmouth but Pompey salvaged a draw with late goals from James Bolton and Ronan Curtis.

Sammie Szmodics and Jonson Clarke-harris scored as Peterborough United beat Crewe Alexandra 2-0 at home.
