Dozens more people die over weekend but national figure drops

DOZENS of people have died from Covid-19 in Staffordsh­ire over the weekend, the latest figures show.

A total of 32 people have died in the county between Friday and Sunday, having tested positive within 28 days of their deaths. With 854 new cases in that time.

There were also 39 deaths in Derbyshire and 27 in Leicesters­hire, taking the total to 98 across the three counties.

A total of 8,269 people in East Staffordsh­ire have now had confirmed cases of Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic – a rise of 164 over the weekend.

There have been six more deaths announced, so the total stands at 355 since the pandemic began. The population of the borough is around 119,754.

A total of 854 new cases were recorded across Staffordsh­ire, including those in East Staffordsh­ire, since Friday.

That means 52,894 people have tested positive in the county as a whole since the start of the pandemic.

In total, 32 more people have died across the county, meaning that a total of 2,078 deaths have been recorded in Staffordsh­ire. All cases were within 28 days of people testing positive for the virus.

In South Derbyshire, there have been 94 new cases, with the total since the start of the pandemic now standing at 6,242.

There have been one five new deaths in South Derbyshire and the total number now stands at 201. The district’s population is around 107,261.

In Derbyshire as a whole, there have been 42,734 cases, 793 of which have been registered over the weekend. These figures include the South Derbyshire cases.

Across the county, where the population is around 802,694, there have been 39 new deaths, meaning 1,599 people have died from the virus since February, last year.

In North West Leicesters­hire, there have now been 4,904 cases since the start of the pandemic, including 96 new cases.

A total of 181 people have died within 28 days of testing positive, with three new deaths recorded over the weekend.

In that time, a total of 37,923 cases have been recorded in Leicesters­hire as a whole, with 639 new cases. The population is around 706,155.

There have been 27 new deaths in the county recorded, meaning 1,122 have now died within 28 days of testing positive.

In the UK over the last 24 hours, there were 14,104 new coronaviru­s cases reported, and 333 more deaths, which is the lowest daily increase of 2021.
