Budget supermarkets reveal more on new town stores
BUDGET supermarket giants Lidl and Aldi have revealed when they plan to open their new Uttoxeter supermarkets.
Lidl is building a new store opposite its current supermarket in Town Meadows, Meadows Way, which will create 20 jobs.
The firm has said it is on course to open the new, improved branch, which will replace the current store, this spring.
And Aldi says it has now started work on its forthcoming store, off Old Knotty Way, with 40 more jobs coming to town.
The German retail firm said the store will open in 2022, but could not narrow that down to a specific quarter.
The Lidl store will open 8am to 10pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am to 4pm on Sundays. The opening hours of the new Aldi are not yet known.
An Aldi spokesman said: “I can confirm that the Uttoxeter store address is Old Knotty Way, with a planned for opening in 2022 and we
have started some preliminary works on site already.”
When the new shops open, there will be four supermarkets - along with Tesco and Waitrose - within a few hundreds yards.
And the town’s Iceland store is just 0.4 miles away from the cluster of supermarkets, with Asda 0.6 miles away.
Aldi green on derelict Knotty Way,
The announcements come as Aldi chiefs revamp their Burton store, in Horninglow Street.
The Burton store is set to reopen in early March, with more spacious isles and a “brighter and better” layout.
A new Lidl is also earmarked for the former home of Burton Rugby Club, Peel Croft, in Lichfield Street.
