Micropub plan for old corner shop approved by planners
A SCHEME to turn a former corner shop into a real ale micropub has taken a step forward.
Planners have approved a bid to convert the former convenience store in Meadow Lane, Coalville, into a new watering hole called The Rock.
North West Leicestershire District Council said it received 11 objections to the proposals for the former store, called Simmy’s, which were largely based on concerns a pub would mean more noise, anti-social behaviour and traffic disruption in a residential area.
However, there were 13 letters of support from people who were keen to have a new venue. The council has concluded, on balance, that a pub is acceptable in that location.
The owners of the Blue Boar in Leicester are behind the venture.
In planning documents submitted to North West Leicestershire District Council, the Blue Boar’s agent, Anthony Thomas, said the new venue’s name was a nod to the nearby former Forest Rock, which served the area.
Mr Thomas said: “This proposal is to create a niche-market microbar selling cask beers, which it is fair to say do not fit the needs of the wider drinks market.
“This is combined with a café serving hot food and drinks, which again will perform a community function, generating a meeting place which does not currently exist.”
Split dahlia tubers to increase your stock. Make sure to keep a good neck, even a piece of the old stalk, and ensure it has at least one eye on the neck or it won’t sprout. On cut ends where there is flesh exposed, dip the tuber in cinnamon – it will help it dry out and stop disease/ rotting.
Sow broad beans in pots indoors now for planting outdoors in March and
April. A sunny windowsill that doesn’t get too hot or a cold greenhouse is ideal for germination.
■ We’re still in the bare root planting season so now’s the time to plant your roses, trees and shrubs inexpensively.
■ Perennials and ornamental grasses that you left over for winter interest can now be cut back before new growth starts.
■ Trim old growth off evergreen epimediums as flowers will start to emerge soon.
■ Prevention is better than cure, so apply a winter wash to fruit trees to get rid of overwintering eggs of pests.
■ It’s a good time to mulch your borders, especially if you have finished pruning shrubs.
