MAKE YOUR OWN COLOURFUL SEA CREATURES TO HANG AT HOME

-

WITH more than 200 species worldwide, jellyfish come in all shapes, sizes and colours.

This week’s make pays tribute to this weird and wonderful creature of the deep.

You could take a look at some of the

1 amazing colours and patterns in real life for inspiration, or be inventive and come up with your own designs.

YOU WILL NEED

An egg box; Coloured tissue paper; Fabric scraps; Ribbons, string sequins, lace, cord etc; Embroidery thread, yarn or string; Beads; Coloured pens; Glue and scissors.

METHOD

1. Cut the egg box into sections. Take two sections and glue one inside the other. If there are gaps, turn the top section to close them. Use clothes pegs to hold the sections in place until the glue dries, if necessary.

2. Remove the clothes pegs and carefully make a hole in the top of your model with a sharp pencil point (picture 1).

3. Cover your model with tissue paper or fabric, trim it to length and glue it down. Draw on patterns with coloured pens or stick on lace, beads and other decorations if you wish. Set aside to dry.

4. To make your jellyfish’s tentacles, cut some lengths of ribbon, cord, sequins and lace or strips of fabric. Make sure they are twice as long as you would like your tentacles to be, as they will be folded in half. Lay them on the table next to each other and, using a piece of embroidery thread, yarn or string, tie the ribbons together halfway along their length (picture 2).

5. Next thread the string through the underside of the body - the knot should stop the tentacles coming up through the hole.

6. Take some beads and thread them on the string.

7. Hang your jellyfish up to decorate your room, they will drift nicely if a breeze catches them.
