Teachers in 100km walk to fund books

TEACHERS at a Burton school will be running miles in exchange for book donations for pupils to use.

Some 21 teachers from Saint Modwen’s Catholic Primary School, in Tutbury Road, will be completing their own individual challenge of either running or walking 100km (62 miles) this month.

The aim of the challenge is to provide the children with more current, diverse and popular texts.

The school has made a wish list on Amazon where parents can purchase the books and the list of more than 250 titles has been drawn up to promote reading and encourage the pupils to broaden the type of books they read - and not just the books that are on the school syllabus.

Parents who want to back the campaign can select books from the list and pay for them, with the titles then going to the school.

Alice Smith, a class teacher, who lives in Burton, said: “The challenge has been going really well and some of our teachers have already completed more than 60km of the challenge. It’s completely up to the teacher if they want to run or walk the challenge and some are even doing a bit of both.
