THE boss of Uttoxeter Racecourse is moving on after 14 years at the helm.

David Macdonald has thanked the whole community for its support over the years as he revealed he is leaving for a new challenge.

The executive director said that the coronavirus pandemic has given him time to reflect and now is the time for him to move on.

Mr Macdonald also highlighted some of his most treasured memories of working at the Wood Lane course, with the Kaiser Chiefs and Madness playing the venue just two of them.

The mammoth crowds of the Midlands Grand National and the opening of the 1907 restaurant are also among his achievements.

Mr Macdonald said: “It is with a heavy heart that I have made the decision to move on from my role as executive director of Uttoxeter Racecourse after 14 amazing years and some fantastic memories.

“It has been a hugely successful journey seeing the business go from strength to strength and I am so grateful to the team members who worked so hard with me to make it all possible.

“I am particularly proud of the way so many of my team developed into outstanding individuals.

“Over the years we made the big days bigger and it was a real thrill bringing famous bands to the town such as the Kaiser Chiefs and Madness. I will also have very fond memories of the way we developed the 1907 Restaurant into one of the best places to dine in any sporting venue in the country.

“It has been a pleasure working in the racing industry and I will never forget how lucky I have been to be a part of it. The roar of the Uttoxeter crowd on Midlands National Day will live with me forever.”

Mr Macdonald praised the role of the racecourse in supporting the community, particularly in the last year. He said: “Racecourses play a major part in their community and the last year has shown how important that relationship can be. I have been proud to see us hosting Covid-19 testing, vaccination clinics and blood donor sessions throughout the pandemic. “The last year has also been a time for reflection and personally the time is right for a new challenge. I wish my successor the very best of luck in the role that has been so rewarding for me. “Uttoxeter has been a lovely place to work and I would like to thank the community for all their support during my time here.”

The roar of the Midlands Grand National Day will live with me forever.
