Reminder on the rules about use of recycling sites

- By NICK REID nick.reid@reachplc.com

COUNCIL bosses are reminding residents that Derbyshire’s nine tips remain open – but only for items that people absolutely have to get rid of.

Derbyshire County Council has issued a tweet saying an increasing number of people are using the recycling centres across the county, especially at weekends.

The authority is asking residents to remember that government guidance concerning the Covid-19 pandemic is still in place which states “you must not leave, or be outside of your home except where necessary”.

The council has reiterated the rules concerning its sites and is calling on people to adhere to them as the restrictions remain in place.

Its tweet reads: “An increasing number of people are using our recycling centres – particularly at weekends.

“Please remember that government guidance is still in place and says ‘you must not leave, or be outside of your home except where necessary.’”

Recycling centres remain open during lockdown, but only for items that you absolutely have to get rid of. THE CURRENT RULES ARE AS FOLLOWS:

■ Only visit one of our sites if you absolutely have to dispose of waste, and then only use your nearest recycling centre.

■ Social distancing measures are still in place at their sites and you may have to queue. Please avoid queuing on main roads.

■ Sort your waste in to different types before you arrive. Avoid busy periods if possible, such as weekends and between 10am and 4pm.

■ Only one person should get out of each car so just take waste that you can comfortably carry by yourself. The sites cannot currently provide help to carry your waste except in emergency situations.

■ Visitors are advised to wear a face covering at the centres if their health allows and should stay at home if they have coronavirus symptoms.

■ Visitors are advised to sanitise their hands before arrival and as they leave.

■ The sites only accept household waste from Derbyshire residents and no commercial waste.

■ Use your kerbside collection bins as much as possible – check your district and borough council websites for details on what you can put in each bin.

The nine sites which fall under the remit of Derbyshire County Council are located in Ashbourne, Bolsover, Bretby, Chesterfield, Glossop, Ilkeston, Loscoe, Northwood (Darley Dale) and Waterswallows near Buxton.

All the centres open from 8.30am to 6pm daily (except Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Years Day). Householders are asked not to turn up early to queue.

WHAT THE SITES CAN ACCEPT

Furniture, electrical appliances, TVS, computer equipment, fridges and freezers, wood, chipboard, green garden waste, old clothes and textiles, paper, cardboard, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and containers and automotive oil (a maximum of 5 litres).

Also accepted are excess bin waste, tyres – a maximum of four from a domestic vehicle – crockery concrete, cement, mortar, rubble, soil and turf from households – maximum 50kgs (equivalent to two 25kg sacks) – asbestos, plasterboard and plasterboard products.

These products are also accepted: batteries – automotive and household – cooking oil, light bulbs, some gas cylinders, household chemicals, paint and mattresses.

WHAT THE SITES CAN’T ACCEPT

Waste from a commercial business, waste left with a householder by a tradesperson, waste from charities, tree trunks and branches over 150mm diameter, scrap vehicles and vehicle parts except tyres (up to 4 from a domestic vehicle) and vehicle batteries.

The sites also cannot accept large items of fitted furniture or units (complete or disassembled) more than 2 window frames (with or without glass) or 2 doors from a DIY project, any waste arising from the demolition of greenhouses.

These products are also not accepted: Any waste arising from construction, demolition or replacement of wooden garden sheds, fencing or decking, soiled pet bedding or pet litter, Christmas cards and wrapping paper for recycling and some gas cylinders.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Please do all you can to minimise the amount of waste you produce and use your local district or borough council kerbside recycling collections as you would normally.

Composting is a great way to get rid of your garden waste and kitchen scraps. The authority has advice to make the most of the food you have and there is further information on Love Food Hate Waste.

Avoid placing items that you’d normally put in your recycling bin in your general waste bin. This takes up space in the collection vehicles needed for general household rubbish

Please do not burn any waste or leave it outside our recycling centres. Leaving waste at the gates or anywhere else is classed as fly tipping and is a criminal offence for which you could be prosecuted and fined up to £50,000 – even if you didn’t dump it. The sites are under CCTV surveillance at all times.

Use a registered waste carrier if you are arranging for someone else to take your waste away. You can do this by checking the Environment Agency’s website.

Personal waste (such as used tissues) and disposable cleaning cloths can be stored securely within disposable rubbish bags.

These bags should be placed into another bag, tied securely and kept separate from other waste. This should be put aside for at least 72 hours before being put in your usual external household waste bin.
