Online tool reveals web speed woes

BUT BURTON WILL GET BOOST WHEN NEW UPGRADE STARTS

- By GEORGE BUNN george.bunn@reachplc.com

A GOVERNMENT tool has revealed which areas of Staffordshire and Derbyshire have the best broadband speeds, with Stafford and Tamworth coming out as among the fastest.

The tool, posted on the official government website, reveals which areas have the best speeds and the variations in broadband availability in the region, based on variations from Ofcom data.

It comes after the Government had to row back on its 2019 election pledge of providing the UK with full-fibre broadband by 2025, instead it is aiming for at least 85% coverage.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “This broadband revolution will fire up people’s businesses and homes, and the vital public services that we all rely on, so we can continue to level up and build back better from this pandemic.”

Broadband firm Openreach also announced plans last year to make “ultra-reliable and gigabit-capable” full-fibre broadband available to 11 market towns and villages across the West Midlands, including Burton and Cannock in Staffordshire.

A spokesman for the company said: “We’re still in the planning stage, and rolling out broadband is complex at times.

“But this is a really substantial build in the Burton area, so the majority of people should benefit.”

The following data has been broken down by parlimentary constituencies, you can check your constituency.

However, 0.5% of premises in Burton are unable to receive 10 Mbps download speed or 1 Mbps upload speed, which Ofcom regards as necessary components of ‘decent broadband.’
