Outdoor swimming beckons as Covid restrictions eased

- By GEORGE BUNN george.bunn@reachplc.com

SPRING is here, and for those who enjoy swimming, there is finally a chance to get in the water again.

Under the Government’s roadmap for exiting the pandemic, from the start of this week people can enjoy outdoor activities such as golf, swimming and tennis.

Unfortunately, there are no openair pools in Burton and the nearest one, Hood Park Lido in Ashby, which has two outdoor pools, is not due to reopen until May.

But if you’re prepared to get in the car, there are some interesting options available.

The Mermaid Pool’s on Kinder Scout in Derbyshire is supposedly haunted by the ghost of a mermaid. Going for a swim here is said to have physical and mental health benefits.

A second mermaid is said to live in Black Mere Pool on the south-western tip of the Staffordshire Peak District.

Legend states she was brought to the site hundreds of years ago by a sailor from the nearby town of Thorncliff.

Those wanting a less haunted experience could try Dosthill Quarry near Tamworth.

The quarry has been a centre of outdoor swimming for more than 80 years since the original granite quarry was flooded with incredibly clean, clear water by a nearby freshwater spring.

The venue says on its website: “The water is currently 6 degrees and getting warmer. Dosthill Quarry will remain open for the rest of this year, subject to Government recommendations or restrictions. It is a healthy open air environment with lots of space for you to maintain two metres physical distancing from non-household members, where you and your family can keep fit, destress & relax.”

To reduce numbers, anyone wishing to swim must pre-book online. Those who turn up without a reservation are likely to be turned away.

A popular outdoor Derbyshire swimming pool is also set to reopen for the first time this year following the easing of lockdown restrictions.

Hathersage Swimming Pool, located within the Peak District, had a “soft opening” on Monday ahead of a full timetable starting from tomorrow.

In a Facebook post, Hathersage Swimming Pool said: “Demand will be incredibly high for the first two to three weeks as our opening coincides with school holidays and indoor pools remain closed until 12th April.

“Our capacity is reduced by more than half for Covid safe operation so please bear with us whilst booking.”

So is cold water swimming good for you? Laura Sanderson, founder of Wild Soul Swim, which highlights the benefits of the activity, said: “Cold water swimming is well known for its physical and mental health benefits.

“The effects on joints and muscles is well known, the cold water can help with inflammation and build up your immune system.

“Cold water is also known to reduce stress and release endorphins. The physical activity of swimming is also excellent for your physical health.”
