Make some waves with foam marbled paper

-

I enjoy marbling with paint – the swirls put me in mind of the sea’s waves and whirlpools.

This easy marbling technique uses shaving foam and paint to achieve excellent results.

It’s exciting as you never know how your artwork will turn out until you rinse the foam away. This project can get messy, so protect your work surface with newspaper and wear old clothes.

YOU WILL NEED:

A tray or container deep enough to hold your foam (I used a ceramic baking dish); a spatula or small piece of thick card; liquid paint; a paintbrush; pieces of thick paper or thin card; some kitchen towel; newspaper; a source of running water.

METHOD

1. Fill your container with shaving foam, to about 2-3cm deep. Smooth the surface out with a spatula or piece of thick card.

2. Squeeze a few blobs of paint on the surface of the foam. Use different colours.

3. With the handle of your paintbrush, draw circles and curves to gently swirl the paint around in the foam.

4. When you are happy with your swirls, place a sheet of thick paper or thin card face down on the foam. Leave in place for a couple of minutes until you can see the design starting to show through.

5. Take a corner of your paper and carefully peel it upwards. This can be messy so have some kitchen roll handy.

6. Carefully take your design to a sink, turn on the tap to a medium-fast flow and run water over it until the foam is gone. Be careful not to rinse it for too long as you don’t want to wash away the paint. Again, this can be messy so take care.

7. Leave your artwork on newspaper to dry. Reuse and refill the foam as necessary.

8. You could frame your paper as it is, use it for a sea collage or even to wrap small presents.
