CRASH RAISES FEARS OVER ‘RACING’ CARS
CALAIS ROAD RESIDENT SPEAKS OUT AFTER CRASH INTO PHARMACY
FEARS have been raised that someone could be killed by cars repeatedly racing along a Burton road where a stolen vehicle crashed into a pharmacy.
As reported in yesterday’s Mail, police were called to Calais Road, Horning low, in the early hours of Sunday to reports that a car had crashed outside the pharmacy.
It was then found the red car had been stolen and officers from Staffordshire Police were able to catch the suspected thieves a couple of streets away.
Pictures from the scene, taken by Rachel Green, show the extent of the damage to a wall surrounding the entrance to the Carlton Pharmacy and Opticians, with the stolen car having narrowly avoiding smashing through the window.
The wall has been completely demolished at one side and damage can be seen to the bottom of the window to the store, although the glass is still miraculously intact.
Parts of the red car and the licence plate also remain at the scene as a result of the crash.
Ms Green, who lives near to the scene, said cars regularly race down the road and it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident if someone steps out onto the road when they fly by. She said: “I’m in Carlton Street and we hear a lot of roars from the cars as they race down Calais Road. It’s scary. It only takes someone to step out onto the zebra crossing and it’ll be a fatality. They’ve adapted their exhausts so they’re as loud as possible. They use it as a straight run.
“Thankfully the time went in everybody’s favour.”
A spokesman for Staffordshire Police previously said they were called to Calais Road early on Sunday to reports of a road traffic collision involving a stolen vehicle and another vehicle.
