Readers call for action to stop street speeders

READERS SPEAK OUT ON CONCERNS ABOUT DANGEROUS DRIVING IN CALAIS ROAD AND SAY SPEED BUMPS ARE NEEDED

CALLS have been made for more to be done to stop cars racing along a road in Burton after a driver in a stolen car demolished a wall and crashed into a pharmacy.

Residents living near to Calais Road, Horninglow, have called for safety measures including speed bumps to be installed on the road after saying “somebody could be killed” by cars racing down the road.

It comes after police were called to Calais Road in the early hours of Sunday morning to reports that a car had crashed outside the pharmacy.

It was then found that the vehicle had been stolen and officers from Staffordshire Police were able to catch the suspected thieves a couple of streets away.

The crash caused damage to the wall surrounding the entrance to the Carlton Pharmacy and Opticians, with the car narrowly avoiding smashing through the window.

The wall was knocked down and there was damage to the bottom of the window at the store, although the glass miraculously stayed intact.

Rachel Green, who lives nearby, told the Burton Mail on Tuesday that cars regularly race down the road and it is only a matter of time before there was a serious accident.

Now readers of our sister website Staffordshire Live have taken to Facebook to share their concerns about the road.

Emma Spencer said: “I’m glad there wasn’t any structural damage to the chemist. Calais Road needs speed humps. Every day and night we hear cars and bikes speeding down from the roundabout.”

Eleanor Callender said: “Totally agree Emma. Definitely speed bumps in Calais Road on the side coming off the roundabout.

“The speed cars, motorbikes go coming along that road is ridiculous. There’s going to be a fatal accident if nothing is done. Glad that no damage was done to the chemist.”

Rachel Lewis said: “Absolutely awful. It’s getting out of control. The only silver lining is that this happened at night so there was nobody around. It could have been so much worse. If something isn’t done, next time somebody could be killed.”

Mark Johnston said: “That’s the second incident at the same junction involving cars in the space of 12 hours on Saturday even though the latter incident didn’t involve parked cars as the chemist was closed.

“But it really doesn’t help drivers when people park their cars right on the junction to run into the chemist and a chip shop even though they have a car park.

“I, as a resident, would like to know just how many incidents involving cars there have been.”

Niall Langan added: “They need to put steel railing all the way around that junction preventing people from parking and to prevent accidents causing serious damage.”

It is not the only road that is having problems with speeding drivers in Burton.

Lisa Attewell said: “It’s the same on Tutbury Road but with lorries. It’s scary how fast they go past at night it needs a camera fitting and soon before something bad happens.”
