AN EXTRA 35 lorries a day will be arriving in Swadlincote as construction of its multi-million pound Woodville Bypass continues.

A new timetable of works linked with the Woodville and Swadlincote regeneration route has been released showing that work on joining the new link road to the new roundabout, along Kiln Way, Woodville is expected to begin on Monday.

It means there will be extra construction traffic over a 10-day period with lorries entering the site off Occupation Lane and leaving via Kiln Way.

The long-awaited bypass from Woodville to Swadlincote is designed to take traffic away from the heavily congested Tollgate Island. The bypass is part of a scheme on the Woodville-to-swadlincote regeneration route project.

It will involve building a new road from Occupation Lane, Woodville, to Kiln Way, Swadlincote, which leads onto Woodhouse Street’s junction with Derby Road.

Derbyshire County Council says the project aims to unlock the development potential of the Woodville regeneration area and will cost approximately £13.44 million.

As well as the bypass, it will also include commercial units and 300 new homes, creating 3,100 jobs, on top of the jobs linked with construction. Work to install new kerbstones and the new drainage systems along the new road between Occupation Lane and Kiln Way are now complete.

Highway workers are now laying the bituminous surfacing layers on the new road. Lorries will use a oneway system, entering the site from Occupation Lane and leaving via Kiln Way. Work will start on building footpaths alongside the new road once the surfacing work has been completed.

There will be around 35 lorries per day, over an approximate 10-day period during this phase of the work. Lorries have been asked to arrive after the site has opened so residents do not have lorries queuing nearby, said a spokesman for the project, which is being led by Derbyshire County Council.

Three-way lights will again be needed at the roundabout in Occupation Lane, while the new link road is joined to the existing roundabout.

In Woodhouse Street, work to connect the new roundabout drainage systems to existing drains on the A514 will be completed during May. Periodic use of two way traffic lights in the nearby Derby Road will be needed to allow safe installation of drainage during this period.

Work on joining the new link road to the new roundabout, along Kiln Way, is expected to begin on May 10 and continue through to August 2021. This will be divided in three sections and that part of the road will be closed to traffic while these sections are completed. Access to businesses will always be maintained, with access from either Woodhouse Street or via the new road from Occupation Lane.
