Morrisons customers threaten boycott over changes to loyalty cards

-

CUSTOMERS have threatened to boycott Morrisons supermarkets after the company announced a major change to the loyalty card scheme.

From this week, shoppers will no longer be able to collect points on their More cards because of changes.

The supermarket giant, that has stores all over the East Midlands as well as the rest of the UK, will move to digital-only offers through its app and website.

This means the last day for shoppers to collect points with their cards was yesterday.

From today, customers will receive offers in pounds rather than points, giving money off certain purchases rather than building up a points balance to spend as they wish.

Outraged customers shared their upset on social media - with some saying they will shop elsewhere, while other Morrisons regulars complained that their accrued points had been taken away and not replaced.

A statement on Morrisons’ website says: “We have listened to our customers and they tell us they prefer to be rewarded with money-off offers and instant rewards, instead of building up points.

“Customers tell us they want to give back to their communities and support the environment by living plastic and paper-free, where possible.

“In response we are removing points and moving to a money-off and instant rewards-based programme delivered through the More app on your mobile phone and website.”

One shopper said: “I can understand Morrisons wanting to be environmentally friendly but at the point of losing customers?

“Reward points going - not a smart move. Plastic cards can be replaced with card ones.

“Don’t give me offers I don’t want nappies or women’s cosmetics. Time to shop elsewhere.”

Another fumed: “What about the people who don’t own a phone, so can’t get the money-off vouchers who have been loyal to Morrisons?

“Bad move Morrisons. Loyalty is a two-way thing. Think I will do more of my shopping at Aldi in future.”

A third added: “Well, I’m elderly and don’t have a phone, so I won’t be shopping at Morrisons any more. Disgraceful treatment of shoppers.”

“What they are proposing just won’t suit me at all,” said another.

“They will reduce prices on a select few items - usually ones I don’t eat.

“I also feel that their prices have gone up quite a bit, so have started shopping at Sainsbury’s.”
