Wycombe chief keeping eye on claims of possible Derby points deduction

-

WYCOMBE Wanderers owner Rob Couhig has said he will “see what happens” as reports emerged on Sunday claiming Derby County could be hit with a points deduction.

The Sun reported that the Rams are set to be sanctioned by the English Football League (EFL) as their long-running battle continues.

In August, Derby were cleared of both charges put to them in January last year, one relating to the sale of the club’s Pride Park Stadium to owner Mel Morris and the other about how the club amortises the value of its players.

The EFL appealed the second charge and the Rams are awaiting the outcome.

Derby avoided relegation on the final day of the season, drawing with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Rotherham United and Wycombe Wanderers have joined the Owls in dropping down to League One.

Wycombe finished one point behind Derby after a late-season surge that put them in contention of staying in the division right up until the last day.

The Chairboys are owned by Rob Couhig, a lawyer from the United States of America, who has commented on the prospect of legal action.

If Derby are deducted points, it remains to be seen whether that will apply this season and retrospectively keep Wycombe up.

Otherwise the Rams could start the next campaign on minus points, if a deduction is forthcoming.

The Mirror has reported that the EFL declined to comment.

“I don’t know that the season is over yet,” Couhig told The Mirror.

“To me, we have accumulated all the points we can and now we will see what happens.

“People tell me that Derby County has some issues out there. I don’t know whether we’re ready to go to lawyers yet.

“But the message is ‘watch this space’.”
