Jordan not convinced by Roo

-

FORMER Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has urged the decision-makers at Derby County to “sleep on it” before deciding whether to stick with Wayne Rooney as manager

Rooney was appointed midway through the season following the sacking of Phillip Cocu.

After an initial upturn in results, the Rams fell down the table in the final weeks, losing six in a row before their dramatic 3-3 draw with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, which proved enough to keep them in the Championship.

Talksport pundit Jordan is not convinced Rooney is the right man to lead the club next season.

“In the first 16 games you get a bounce, because the players are reacting in a certain way, and he got 27 points,” said Jordan.

“The second 16 games, which is the business end of the season when you’re really knuckling down, he got 10 points. That’s relegation form in any parallel universe.

“With Wayne Rooney and the management team he’s got there, I’m a big fan of Shay Given, I like him as bloke.

“Liam Rosenior is a very bright young coach and Wayne, I’ve no doubt he’ll learn and earn the right to be a manager

“Another side’s (Rotherham) failure has kept Derby in the division, another side getting six points deducted (Wednesday) at the beginning of the season has kept Derby in the division.

“The idea that Wayne Rooney could and should be the manager for next year...

“If I’m the Derby owner, I would urge them to sleep on it. And if I woke up in the morning and still thought it was a good idea, I’d probably urge myself to go back to the bed.

“The idea that he is going to give you a solution is not there.

“Wayne is a top class footballer but 10 points from 16 games, at the business end of the season, is just not the credentials to suggest this guy can take the club forward.”
