Booth sees progress for Brewers women
BURTON Albion Women joint manager Tommy Booth hailed Sunday’s 0-0 draw away to Boldmere St Michaels as a sign of the progress the team have made in a year.
It was their second game of the season, having lost 1-0 to Doncaster Rovers Belles in their first in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands.
But it was the fact that Booth and joint boss Kristian Gilbert took charge of their first Brewers game away to Boldmere last season – and lost 10-1 – that signalled progress.
The team put on a resolute performance to earn a clean sheet and a first point of the season.
“It was another fantastic performance for us,” said Booth.
“Boldmere was our first game in charge last year, we went into it having not even taken a training session and we lost 10-1.
“To go from that in October or November, to a 0-0 now, shows massive progression.
“We’ve had two teams, in Doncas
ter and Boldmere, who could be the top two and we’ve conceded only one goal.”
Booth says it was a tactical decision to soak up pressure against Boldmere and that he expects his side to attack a lot more going forward.
“We set up to frustrate them and usually we will have a go at everyone but we looked to sit deep and soak up the pressure,” he said.
“Credit to the girls for doing that, because they did it really well.
“On another day we could have got a point against Belles, hitting the bar.
“The atmosphere in the changing room was fantastic, which is strange after a 0-0! We were over the moon with it.
“Hopefully, now we go into a few games where we can look to go at them.”
To put the result further into context, Boldmere had won their opening fixture 8-1 away to Bedworth United.
Tomorrow, the Brewers are away to Long Eaton United, who have won their first two games 4-0 and 6-1, so will provide another stern test.
On Sunday, Burton are at home, at Rocester FC, to Peterborough United, who beat Bedworth 5-1 on Sunday in their first game.
Spectators can attend that game, which kicks off at 2pm. for an admission price of £3 (£1 concessions).
