A BURTON pub will be hosting a unicorn-themed fund-raiser in memory of an eight-year-old girl who died from cancer.

The Navigation will be decorated with unicorns, which Kasie Iris Kirby loved before she lost her battle with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a highly aggressive form of brain tumour.

Mum Laura Jones opened up to the Burton Mail yesterday about the devastating effect Kasie’s death has had on her family.

Kasie was diagnosed with the illness in February and fought it hard for five months before she died just a few weeks ago.

And now in her memory, the landlady of The Navigation, Sandra Russell, will be hosting a fund-raiser.

All proceeds will go to Young Children vs Cancer, a charity that helps families find the strength to face everything cancer throws at them.

It will take place at the Horninglow Road pub today, from 12.20pm to 11pm, with features including a bouncy castle, face painting, tombola and a raffle.

Sandra, who lives in Burton said: “I was told about Kasie by her aunt Lorraine and I was so touched by what had happened that I wanted to something to help.

“I wanted to do the fund-raiser while Kasie was alive, but unfortunately she passed away, so the day will still be in memory of her. The theme will be unicorns, as Kasie loved them, so I’ll be decorating the pub with unicorns.

“The community has really supported me and donated om great prizes which will be up for grabs on the day.

“There will be plenty happening on the day – weather permitting, we’ll be outside and there’ll be a disco.

“There’ll be Disney characters for the children and the food will be provided by the Cheeky Maharaja, who specialises in Indian-style fish and chips.

“All the proceeds on the day will go to the charity Young Lives vs Cancer, who did a great job supporting Kasie and her family through a very tough period, and I hope the money raised on the day will help plenty more families in this position.”
