Victory for Burton AC to polish off their season

- ATHLETICS

BURTON Athletic Club’s seniors finished their league season with a home win.

The club’s throwers starred as they piled up enough points to beat Cannock, Stoke, Tamworth and Newcastle Staffs.

Three of these teams would normally be in a higher league rather than this year’s structure, which focused on geography to reduce travelling.

The throwers took 76 points out of a possible 82, Callum Jones starting off with second in the hammer with a personal best of 40.86m.

Isaac Wood was second in the B event, then won the discus with 43.36m, Ben Acton adding the B win.

Acton was second with a PB of 12.46m in the shot, in which Lewis Botterill won the B with a PB of 11.23m which took the club’s under-20 record from Acton.

The women dropped only two points, highlighted by Jenna Galiszewski stretching the club record to 47.28m in the hammer, Maddie Hughes adding the B win.

Galiszewski was second in the discus but Gemma Atkinson-parker won the B before winning the shot, in which Galiszewski won the B.

Atkinson-parker and Nicola Long won in the shot.

Tom Benfield won the pole vault with 3.40m, Jonathan Dumelow adding the B with a club V35 record of 2.80m.

Jack Poxon won the triple jump and was second in the long jump, Matthew Burton adding the B win in the triple.

Paige Barker got Burton’s day started on the track with a senior debut over the 400m hurdles and third in 75.9 seconds. Robert O’brien was third in a PB of 63.6 and Jonathan Dumelow won the B in 86.3.

Jack Shorten was third at 1500m, while Jack Dennis, second in the B, took nearly 20 seconds off his best in 4.40.8.

At 800m, Callum Abberley was looking to break the two-minute barrier for the first time since 2018 and did so with second place in 1.57.2.

Burton piled up good placings in the rest of the track events to stay in front coming to the relays and landed third in both men’s and women’s 4x100m races.

The women were fifth in the 4x400m before Freddie Kugelman’s storming final lap brought the men home second.

■ BURTON’S veterans also ended their league season at Shobnall with second in the men’s events and fourth in the women’s for third overall.

Among the highlights was a fine win for Duncan Stewart, catching his rival on the line in

the M35 800m, having been third with 100m to go.

The field events saw a double second in the pole vault, going to Alec Taylor in the V40 group and Paul Smith in the V60 group.

Jack Poxon took Burton’s only other win on the night with 11.37m in the triple jump.

Brain Bowley covered the hammer with fourth in 15.33 and John Hendon threw 21.78 for third in the javelin. There was a club record for Jill Lamb in the discus, throwing 12.85m for third and a new W60 best.

Also at under-15, George Kugelmann picked up a PB in the discus with 21.44m. A 1500m night at Nuneaton saw Saffron Bowley set a PB of 5.07.95.
