Zoo visitors were urged to stay away after crash blocked road nearby

TWYCROSS Zoo was urging people not to visit yesterday following a major crash outside the attraction.

The A444 at Twycross has been closed after a two-car collision left a motorists trapped in their vehicle.

Leicesters­hire Police were called to the incident at 1.36pm yesterday, which happened close to the entrance of the zoo.

The ambulance service and fire service were then called to the scene to assist with those injured and trapped and removed the roof of one of the cars, Leicesters­hire Live reported.

The A444 was blocked and then later closed by police to allow time for the fire service to remove a person who was trapped in one of the vehicles.

Bosses from Twycross Zoo later took to their Twitter account to warn people that the road was closed, and visitors were advised to contact the zoo to rearrange their visit.

An incident report published by Leicesters­hire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Initial call from Police at 1.42pm advising of a two-vehicle Road Traffic Collision outside of Twycross Zoo.

“Upon arrival this is a confirmed two vehicle RTC with one person trapped and being assessed by East Midlands Ambulance Service.

“Police, fire and ambulance in attendance.

“At 2.33pm the driver from one vehicle has self extricated prior to the arrival of fire service and is currently being assessed by ambulance.

“Roof removal of other vehicle has now been completed, driver is being extricated by fire service and is being transporte­d to hospital for further assessment­s.”

A spokespers­on for Leicesters­hire Police said: “We were initially called at 1.36pm following reports of a two-vehicle collision outside of the entrance to Twycross Zoo.

“East Midlands Ambulance Service and Leicesters­hire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene shortly after.

“The road was blocked at 1.50pm, with the A444 then fully closed at 2.10pm. The roof has had to be cut off one of the cars.

“The incident is still ongoing at this time, with us handling the road closure while the fire service handles the trapped person, and the ambulance service handles any injuries.”

The condition of the injured people was not known at the time of going to press.
