Stephen King who said you can’t be a writer if you don’t read. I think I took tips from that, but also I think you should write what you know. And I know journalism and the media.”

Steve says his debut novel Storm Death is “enthralling” and “authentic” as he consulted people in the police force about how crimes are investigated.

He said: “In my time (working) at Nottingham Trent (University), our journalism students used to hold practice press conferences with real members of the force.

“I didn’t know much about how the police worked, so I spoke to the people who would run these events.

“They’ve helped me put together the novel and have given me tips on how crime investigations work.

“I get annoyed when I’m watching TV now and they show something wrong and inauthentic. My book is the opposite of that.

“I took a lot of inspiration from Peter James. He’s a terrific writer and I love how he takes the town of Brighton, where he sets all his stories, and turns the setting into almost a character in itself. I wanted to do the same with the East Midlands.

“I put so much research into this story and I’m very excited with how it has turned out.

“I finished the first draft earlier this year but all the ideas have come in over a long time.”
