A MAN died of a “stab wound to the chest” as a Swadlincote man is accused of involvement in his death.

Byron Dion Griffin was found with a single knife wound to the chest on July 4, in Eyre’s Garden, Ilkeston, his inquest hearing has heard.

Jordan Fairbrother, of Nelson Street, Swadlincote, is one of four men who is accused of involvement in his murder.

The 26-year-old has not yet entered a plea to the charge.

Dylan Geary, 21, Daniel Lewsley, 32, Grant James Masterson, 29, all of Ilkeston, have all denied killing the 22-year-old.

The inquest opening into the death of Mr Griffin, of East Leake, Ilkeston, revealed he died of his injuries the day after they were sustained at 1.25pm.

A post-mortem examination conducted by Professor Guy Rutty on July 9, identified that the cause of death was a “stab wound to the chest”.

Peter Nieto, area coroner for Derby and Derbyshire, adjourned the inquest until January 4, 2022.

At this point, the coroner will reassess whether an inquest is needed.

Mr Nieto said: “Four people have been charged in relation to Mr Griffin’s

death with a provisional trial date of January 4, 2022, so I’ve adjourned the inquest pending the outcome of the criminal trials.

“Mr Griffin was 22 when he died. He had been found on a street in Ilkeston with an apparent chest stab wound on July 4, 2021, and received emergency treatment at the scene.

“He was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre for treatment and further resuscitation attempts but he died later that afternoon.”

Following his death, Mr Griffin’s mother, Zoe Cooke, said: “Byron’s death has absolutely devastated my family. He is my only son and leaves behind three sisters aged 10, 11 and 27 who will never, ever get over this.

“Byron was loved by so many – to the point that one of his old teachers came to see me to pay his condolences despite him leaving school years ago.

“Byron was my absolute heartbeat and our lives will never be the same again – the pain is absolutely unbearable. We are all devastated beyond belief and I wouldn’t wish this on any parent.

“My boy will never hold or kiss me again and I will never come to terms with that.”
