Four deaths on the roads in just a week
DERBYSHIRE EMERGENCY SERVICES ATTEND SEVERAL ACCIDENTS
FOUR people have died on roads in Derbyshire in the space of just a week – including one in a South Derbyshire village and another on the A38.
A spokesman for the Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit said it had been a sad few days for the team as they attended the scenes of the accidents across the county.
Officers have taken on different roles as scene managers, investigators and family liaison as they have helped those involved in the accidents while gathering evidence as to what caused the crashes.
The ones they have attended include an accident in Egginton Road, Etwall, just after noon on Tuesday. A Peugeot 208 was in collision with two parked cars, a Mazda and a Volkswagen Up.
A pedestrian, named as James Andrew Bane, 50 (see below), died at the scene .
A 34-year-old woman, who was also a pedestrian, was injured during the crash. She was released from hospital on Tuesday after she had received treatment for her injuries.
The road was closed for several hours on Tuesday but reopened just before 6pm.
A motorist, a 50-year-old man, was arrested and has now been bailed as inquiries continue.
An HGV driver died after an accident on the A38 the following day. The crash involved three Army trucks and a lorry.
The 53-year-old trucker, who has not been named, sustained serious injuries in the accident and he was transferred to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham where he was pronounced dead later that day. His family has been informed.
The accident, which happened near Mickleover in Derby, caused major disruption as the road was closed, with traffic stretching as far as Burton.
A spokesman for the roads policing unit, which is an arm of Derbyshire police, said: “A really sad few days on the roads of Derbyshire. Five deaths over the course of a week. Many others injured. Thoughts are with the family and friends of those involved. Road policing unit officers wearing many hats at each incident - scene manager, investigator, family liaison.”
One of the other accidents happened on Monday when 94-year-old Ina Crouch was involved in a fatal collision in Eckington. The incident took place at 3.30pm in Church Street between the junctions with Sheffield Road and Mill Road.
The other accident happened in the north of the county.
Cyclist stephen Littlewood was riding with three others when there was a fatal collision on the A619 from Wadshelf to Baslow.
The 58-year-old from Darley Moor was pronounced dead at the scene and enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances of the incident which occurred at 11.20am on September 25.
