Guide to what’s in store at 2021 event

-

Burton’s Statutes funfair will be back next week after being forced to take a year off due to the pandemic.

thousands of people are expected to turn up to the event, which boasts hair-raising rides and an assortment of sideshows.

Families have flocked to the event for decades but had to stay away last year due to Covid.

However, a token children’s ride was set up to ensure an ancient royal charter allowing the event to take place was not broken.

this year’s fair will be held on Monday, october 4, and tuesday, october 5, in the Market Place and the surrounding areas of High Street, Lichfield Street and new Street.

the fair will be open to the public from noon to 11pm on Monday. on tuesday, it will open at noon and close at 10pm.

Fairground staff will start building the fair tomorrow.

road and car park closures will be in place from noon tomorrow until 6am on Wednesday, allowing the funfair to close and dismantle rides. once the fair has left town the closure will allow for the the streets to be swept and normal business to continue.

■Barriers to stop traffic will be erected at:

■Lichfield Street at its junction with Fleet Street/park Street;

■Abbey Street at its junction with Fleet Street;

■new Street adjacent to the entrance to the Coopers Square roof top car park;

■High Street at its junction with Station Street.

During the fair bus stops on new Street, Lichfield Street and the bus-only part of High Street are not in use. Buses may drop off at different points when arriving into Burton.

Buses also stop at Burton railway Station or Bar gates if part of their usual route.

Pat Collins Fun Fairs has been associated with Burton for more than 100 years. the Statues Fair is the modern-day successor to the traditional labour hiring fair held in the town each year on the first Monday and tuesday after Michaelmas.
