Drivers infuriated by long delays on road into town

MOTORISTS ALSO WARNED OF HUGE DIVERSION ROUTE WHEN A38 CARRIAGEWAY IS SHUT OVERNIGHT

THERE were huge queues on a major Burton road yesterday as roadworks brought traffic grinding to a halt.

The A5121 Derby Road was backed up way down the road on the approach to the Princess Way roundabout, with queues stretching past Clay Mills onto the A38.

There are temporary traffic lights in place near Mcdonald’s while Western Power digs up the road and works on cabling beneath.

One motorist stuck in the queues said she had come off the A38 heading into Burton when she hit the gridlock.

She has been crawling along the road for 15 minutes and had still not reached the Princess Way roundabout near the Pirelli Stadium.

She said: “This is absolutely infuriating as I have an appointment I’m now running late for.

“I can’t believe how much of a hold-up these roadworks are causing.

“We’re crawling along a few yards every minute and I can see other drivers are equally as annoyed as I am. They’re visibly infuriated.”

The lights are scheduled to be in place until midnight today, with motorists advised by highways chiefs to allow extra travel time for their journeys.

Derby Street is also closed between Byrkley Street and Victoria Road with emergency road works for dangerous manhole works being carried out by Severn Trent Water until the scheduled end date of October 25

Meanwhile, a massive diversion route has been put in place when a key stretch of the A38 is closed.

The A38 Alrewas from Tuesday to Friday next week will be completely shut southbound from Barton Turns to Alrewas, including the sliproads, between 8pm to 6am.

Hi ghwa y s England will be carrying out barrier and car r iageway repairs. A massive diversion route will take motorists onto the A50, past Swarkestone, onto the A42, past Measham, onto the A5, past Tamworth, and back onto the A38 near Lichfield.

A Highways England spokesman said: “From Tuesday to Friday, October 12 to 15, the A38 will be closed southbound between Barton Turns junction and Alrewas junction, including the slip roads, while we continue to complete barrier and carriageway repairs.

“During these closures we’ll be utilising the alternative diversion route that was in place earlier in the month.

“This will help reduce the impact of the diversion on the local road network.

“We’re sorry for any disruption that our work may cause you; please plan and allow extra time for your journey.”
