A NEW Burton restaurant offering “authentic Bengal cuisine” was set to open last night.

Bengal Village opened in New Street serving food from the Bengal region of India.

The restaurant is being run by Oli Rahman, from Burton, who worked in the former Mezbaan restaurant, which once stood in the same building.

Oli said he could not wait to get the doors open and offer the people of Burton a “new dining experience”.

The 27-year-old said: “The idea for the restaurant came about around four months ago.

“People had told me that there was no Bengal food on offer.

“They said that a lot of the other curry places serve similar food and wanted some proper Bengal food.

“My family are all from that region so I knew that sort of cuisine from growing up. I used to work as a floor manager at the old Mezbaan restaurant and I always wanted to open my own restaurant.

“When Mezbaan closed, it was a golden opportunity for me. I have been in the sector for around ten years so I can’t wait to start here.

“We want to serve decent food to customers. The menu is going to be something different. The curries we are going to be serving are all from the Bengal region, with an emphasis on South Bengal.

“In terms of the decor, we are just putting the finishing touches, but it is going to be the best.

“We have made it very beautiful inside. We have assembled a team of eight people who are all dedicated and ready to provide the best experience. It all looks good and we are very excited.

“Booking has been open and we have had a lot of interest from the community. People want proper authentic Indian food.

“Our chef has been in the industry for around 25 years, he’s very good. We have nicknamed him the King of Curry.

“He’s made a menu featuring some of the most popular Bengali dishes and people from Burton will be now able to experience that for themselves.”

Oli has said he is offering diners an exclusive offer to mark the restaurant’s opening, by offering dishes at half price.

He added: “We’re going to be treating diners by offering 50 per cent for those people who come to eat in the restaurant.

“We’re doing that because we want everyone to come down and sample what we have to offer. We’ll do halfprice on delivery next week.

“We want to give customers the best food and experience in Burton. We want people to leave with a smile and a full stomach.

“I just want all customers who like curry to come on down and try our food.”
