The landing was no ‘emergency’ but simply an incident that happened after a normal landing. Aviation expert

AN aviation expert has explained why the engine of a plane landing at East Midlands Airport appeared to be on fire.

There were fears the Kalitta Air Boeing 747 was making an emergency landing when it touched down at the Castle Donington airport last Thursday.

A flare was spotted tted emerging from the he jumbo jet, which had earlier taken off from Leipzig, Germany. Many people thought there was a fault on the plane when a picture captured by an onlooker showed the flames coming from one of the engines.

But an aviation expert xpert has now revealed exactly what had happened.

He said: “What happened was no worse than a car backfire. “The water on the runway got into the engine and caused it to cut out, the engine pumped more fuel into the pipes and as it reignited, it caused a few small flames. It causes no damage to the aircraft, or danger to any people, all that happens is it requires a quick inspection after landing. “The landing was no ‘emergency’ but simply an incident that happened after a normal norma landing.”

A video posted to Youtube titled “Kalitta Cargo Jumbo Jum With Slight Engine En Backfire” shows sh the plane coming c in to land. It shows the landing l going normally, m apart from a split-second s flare of flames fla from one engine. eng

A reader also commented online: “There was no em emergency declared. The engine just took in a lot of water when it landed and the tyres were fine. Someone managed to capture a great picture of it that’s all.”
