BOSSES at a village pub say they could not have been crowned the best in the country without their community pulling together.

The efforts of the Robin Hood, in Lullington Road, Overseal, have been recognised by the judges at the Great British Pub Awards in the category of Hawthorn Pub of the Year.

The Hawthorn Leisure pub was nominated by the pub company due to its work supporting the community through the Covid crisis.

Landlady Ruth Lewis said: “We are just thrilled to have even been one of six out of 1,500 pubs.

“We couldn’t have won this without the community contributing through Covid. It just hasn’t sunk in yet.”

The pub and members of the community worked to prepare and deliver free school meals, run a community food bank and deliver Easter eggs to hundreds of children unable to go out during the first lockdown.

The pub did not stop there and recently, along with the committee and Morrisons, helped prepare and deliver around 300 free school meals between the first and second lockdowns.

It also became a food bank venue and helped support a women’s refuge. A spokesman for Hawthorn Pubs said: “Wishing Ruth, Steve and TJ at the Robin Hood Overseal the biggest congratulations for winning the ‘ Hawthorn Pub of the Year’ award at the Great British Pub awards.

“The support you have shown the local community is truly outstanding and we couldn’t be prouder to see you win this award. “From everyone at Hawthorn, well done and well deserved.”

We couldn’t have won this without the community contributing through Covid. Ruth Lewis
