1989: England earned their place in the 1990 World Cup finals in Italy with a goalless draw in Poland, thanks to four excellent saves from 40-year-old Peter Shilton.

1999: Sir Alex Ferguson’s testimonia­l drew a crowd of 55,824 to watch Manchester United against a World XI which included Old Trafford greats Eric Cantona and Peter Schmeichel.

2003: England qualified for Euro 2004 with a goalless draw against Turkey.

2010: Discus thrower Krishna Poonia won India’s first ever athletics gold at the Commonweal­th Games in Delhi.

2013: Former Formula One test driver Maria De Villota died at the age of 33, suffering a cardiac arrest while on a tour promoting her autobiogra­phy Life Is A Gift. In 2012 she had sustained serious injuries, losing her right eye, after a crash while testing for Marussia.

2014: St Helens beat Wigan 14-6 in the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford after the early dismissal of Wigan’s Ben Flower for punching Lance Hohaia in the second minute of the match.

2015: Lewis Hamilton won the Russian Grand Prix and his Mercedes team lifted the Formula One constructo­rs’ championsh­ip following Kimi Raikkonen’s (Ferrari) 30-second time penalty.

2019: Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli scored a career-best 254 not out to move past 7,000 Test runs on day two of the seconnd Test against South Africa in Mumbai. India won by an innings and 137 runs

2019: England lost their first qualifying match for a decade as they were beaten 2-1 by the Czech Republic in their Euro 2020 qualifier in Prague.

2020: Rafael Nadal won a record-equalling 20th grand slam men’s singles title by beating Novak Djokovic 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 in the French Open final.

2020: Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton equalled Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 Formula One victories by winning the Eifel Grand Prix.
